This week I was super-excited to have a chat with romance author Betty Shreffler, where we discussed our shared joy for sexual innuendos, haunted house book signings, her new novel Fire On The Farm (A Second Chance Cowboy Romance), & her lack of enthusiasm for coffee (I know, when I heard this I thought we almost couldn’t be friends).

Keep reading below for all the juicy details…

Olivia: First off, tell us something ridiculous, funny, or inappropriate about yourself?

Betty: I have a tendency to make EVERYTHING sexual – even things that aren’t. I have a big sense of humor and find the sexual innuendos in everything.

Olivia: Bacon, crispy or limp?

Betty: I only do bacon on burgers, or bacon bits on potatoes and salad. For some reason plain bacon isn’t appetizing to me.

Olivia: Red or white?

Betty: white wine. I lurve wine! Especially Sweet Muscadine

Olivia: Nude beach: Would you or not?

Betty: Yeah, I’m game. If everyone is nude, there’s nothing to be shy about.

Olivia: Are ghosts real?

Betty: Could be, haven’t seen any myself. I love all things supernatural though. Even doing a book signing in a haunted house in 2019. I’m really looking forward to that.

Olivia: Does size matter?

Betty: YES!! Lol

Olivia: Most inappropriate guilty pleasure?

Betty: I don’t have any inappropriate guilty pleasures or at least none I want to share. 😉 But I do have guilty pleasures such as; wine, chocolate, and bubble baths and I don’t feel guilty about any of those.  🙂

Olivia: Your slightly neurotic pet peeve?

Betty: Slow drivers, clutter

Olivia: Something you hate that other people love?

Betty: Coffee (What? Shocking, I know, but I hate the taste and when I tried it a couple times it made me bounce off the walls, then crash into exhaustion 30 minutes later.)

Olivia: What’s one thing that has made you grow (as a person) more than anything else?

Betty: I suffered a traumatic experience as a child that caused me to live with PTSD and depression. I struggled through it for years, and on top of dealing with the PTSD, depression and personal insecurities, I dealt with bullying from siblings and older students in school.

I had days that were extremely difficult to get through and I even dealt with suicidal thoughts two different times in my life, but I never gave up and always found solace in my writing, being outdoors or working/spending time with animals.

The fact that I’ve overcome and gained control over my depression and PTSD has made me grow in ways I could never explain with words. It took a lot of courage and inner strength to make it through the emotional, mental and physical turmoil that I did. Today, I’m stronger than ever and proud of the person I’ve become. I’m an advocate for those who also suffer from depression and do what I can to bring positivity into the lives of those around me.

Olivia: What’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done?

Betty: I’m a very daring and adventurous person and love to do outdoor activities. I’ve gone parasailing, zip lining, a Nascar ride along, canoed in class 3 white water rapids, canoed and kayaked in the Everglades with alligators. I do wildlife photography and have been face to face with a black bear, alligator, coyote, bull elk and wild mustang. A wolf and moose are the remaining beauties I’d like to get in front of my camera.

Olivia: Tell us a little about your latest book:
Betty: My newest upcoming release is Fire On The Farm (Second Chance Cowboy Romance). Release date: April 29th

One of my own personal fears is losing my husband because of his high risk job. I feel the idea for Fire On The Farm stems from that fear. If I had more money and land I’d love to start a horse therapy ranch for the protection of horses and for folks who have suffered from sexual or physical abuse to come and work with the horses to help them heal. That is where the other idea came from for this story. I ended up doing quite a bit of horse research for the horse therapy ranch parts of this book. Each book I’ve written has required research. I’ve studied; mythology, cultural anthropology, horses, motorcycle clubs and the inner workings of MMA fighting to bring my books to life.

Olivia: What’s the spice level?

Betty: There’s definitely some heat in this book. Several hot sex scenes. I can’t write a book without some steam in it. Those are some of my favorite parts!
